Ron is an experienced diver and underwater photographer. When living on the East coast, he frequented the beautiful coral reefs in the Florida Keys. It was there that he became familiar with the spectacular marine life native to the area and throughout the Caribbean. Other diving adventures include the Virgin Islands, Honduras, Hawaii, and the cold waters of the Pacific Northwest.Early paintings were rendered in acrylic with paint brush and airbrush. Recent works were painted in Photoshop with digital paintbrushes.

Hybrid - Hand Painting / Digital
It is fun to scan portions of paintings and old illustrations and create something entirely new.The example below is an illustration created for a client that included renderings of a futuristic hawk. The hawk was combined with a mountain background from one of Ron’s alpine paintings, then enhanced with texture and detail in Photoshop.
The painting below was from a Washington State wine label illustration.
Digital Painting - How it’s done
1 - Digital paintings usually start with a pencil sketch, that is scanned into Photoshop as a base layer.2 - Details are brushed in, one by one in overlying layers.3 - The rough painted shapes are then smudged, blended and made translucent to reveal underlying detail.4 - Related layers are combined into one and modified with color and texture filters.5 - All layers are then merged into one and further adjusted with distort and warp tools. The completed head is then combined with the wings, body and tail feathers to create the completed image. The entire eagle required over 100 layers and weeks to complete.6 - Final touches include light and shadows to match the background atmosphere.
